Simmer on the Bench
Downtown is a great spot for clubs, dancing and getting debauched, but the Benches have it going on, too. If you find yourself south of 2700 South, here are some spots to keep in mind:

A Bar Named Sue (3928 S. Highland Drive) home of free pool, shuffleboard, arcade games and jukebox parties every night of the week. Saturdays you can find Solid Gold, “Utah’s Original ’80s Rock Cover Band,” being as original as they can. Also, check out the karaoke action on Monday and Thursday.

Cruzrs (3939 S. Highland Drive) This dive has become one of the better weekend karaoke venues in town, thanks to a rowdy suburban crowd. Every Saturday finds irresistible singalongs and merrymaking.

Liquid Joe’s (1249 E. 3300 South) This venue features The Spazmatics doing ’80s and ’90s covers on Saturdays, with The Metal Gods doing their best hair metal renditions on Thursdays. Look forward to The Disco Dropouts (formerly The Disco Drippers) on March 5.

Tony’s “Lit Lounge” (3165 S. 1300 East) Thursdays get AC/DC’d with DJ Bentley. Electric Thursdays feature some great prices on high quality liquors and even better music from your hip-hop host during the night reputed to be the “longest-running Thursday-night party in SLC.”

Get Your Grizzly On
Jam’s (751 W. 300 North) new liquor license came in handy the last week of February, as a bunch of hairy studs vied for title of “2010’s Mr. Utah Bear” and “2010’s Mr. Utah Cub” competition. The contest, orchestrated by the Utah Bear Alliance, kicked off with Jam’s traditional karaoke Wednesdays under the novel name “Bear-A-Oke” and continued all week long. The bar’s new drinks, served by bartender Joe Fisher, are varied and excellent along the lines of the gentle “Leg Spreader” and the spicy “Hell in a Handbasket.” Try the neon green Cirque du Salt Lake City next time you’re in the neighborhood. Sushi is also available Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
