The hotel in the movie, The Shining, is mostly filmed in studio. The exterior was the Timberline Lodge in Oregon. Stephen King based his novel, The Shining, off of his experience staying at The Stanley Hotel, which he called The Overlook in the book. When filming Dumb & Dumber, Jim Carey spent one night in the Stanley, and refused to stay there ever again. He also refused to tell any media about what happened.
