The more people that call out this pathetic hack the better. Coverage of the U should be THE beat to have as a journalist here, but it seems like reporters get stonewalled by the lack of media access and resort to speculative drivel like Monson. Even more responsible reporters get sucked into the twitter B.S.
Journalism is on life support at the Trib and the DNews died a while ago.
Re: “A Matter of Source”
Mr. Means- love you, love your column. Piper is good. But Harrington's point stands even if there were 20 Trib writers covering the Utes. Monson made up utter B.S. (that Whittingham was going to BYU, leaving etc.) and implied that it was a near certainty. For him to act like a journalist that is reporting "facts" and then retreat behind "I'm only a columnist" when those facts turn out to be false is duplicitous at best. It hurts recruiting and impacts players.
Monson has done this before. Remember when he ran with a fake rumor on a message board in 2004 about "Utah's next coach"? It's one thing to have an opinion, but to imply over and over that you have inside info that you're basing your opinions on just to stir the pot is crap.
Don't defend Monson- he's indefensible. He's a troll and embarrassment to the rest of the Trib staff.
