Well stated. And for the record, there are plenty of jackass drivers to go around, too. When both sides become more aware and more safe, all the better. My hope is that law abiding, normal, conscientious bike riders don't gut rally behind the jackasses just because each transport on two wheels.
Deb--thank you for your comment. I really don't think the article will scare anyone back into their cars. With all due respect, that's silly!!
I never advocated auto driving, good or bad. Never dismissed auto deaths (for that, please see the 20 or so I've written against Drunk Driving). I said, in summation, more and more people think more and more bicycle riders are behaving badly. And that it's becomming a serious problem.
My not condoning them does not mean I ignore a different, unrelated problem, or excuse bad behavior somewhere else.
I will ask a CW reporter if he or she will write a balanced new story as to the ratio of good and bad bike riders--the ones described above as "psychos." Now, that's scary, and is, kinda what I was talking about. Glad we agree.
Respectfully, John
You're right--lucky is the better word. We arrived to where we were going safely, but not in a safe manner. On the other point, cabs don't really have to drive around--they can turn off their engines and wait outside a busy club or restaurant Yes, it's silly to become impatient and drive hope while waiting for a called cab, but people do. Hoping your personal responsibility rubs off. Good idea on amateur night. Thanks.
I can agree with some of what you say, not with other points. However, this is appreciated. And you, or anyone else can always contact me or anyone at the paper directly to voice concerns. If you care to, I'm at john@cityweekly.net for more discussion. Thanks, John
Seeing this for the first time, online in New York, I have to first say thanks to the CW staff for a fine compilation, though it wasted space on me. But as a minor point of historical correctness, SLUG was not founded in the old Private Eye office in Midvale. JR Ruppel was already publishing SLUG when he began working with us. He did use our office, computers, tools etc for producing SLUG for a couple of years, I'd guess, helping to keep SLUG going and Private Eye as well.
Alan. Waaay too much specious analysis, blind assumptions and wishful thinking on your part for my adolescent mind. But, will grant that I was full of shit on the claim to higher ground--should have said, we tend to side with the little guy against the big guy and left it at that. If the story as it was told to me is the big, fat lie you want it to be, we'll all know soon enough, won't we? I will take the dollar, though. Danke.
Re: “Some Thanks”
Thank you for the note, Holly. We've corrected the text above and will print a correction in next week's paper issue. Shoddy, as I've known Tina since about 1972--she taught me the words nisei and sansei and introduced me to the dining of 47 Samurai-- and I have always thought her dad was Wat. U fever, I guess. Apologies, to Misaka family.
