Re: “The Lady in the Van

I have to disagree with Renshaw's take on this movie. If one writes a story, particularly one based upon a very intimate experience, it is inevitably told from the writer's perspective. Writers are necessarily self-involved, and that was an important part of the story. In this case the writer's perspective is balanced, compassionate, and appropriately self-deprecating. They learned from one another. This was not a narcissistic tale by any stretch.

Re: “The Revenant

Loved it. I felt the camera work and scenes made the viewer feel immersed and inexorably caught up in the action, the trials, and journey for revenge. Like you were there.

Re: “The Revenant

If you can't understand this movie's value, I feel sorry for you. Complaining about superficial details like Leo's breath on the camera and using as an excuse to discount the entire film seems petty. I understand if you don't like this film on a personal level. Maybe "The Revnant" doesn't call to your personal sensibilities, but to say that Inarritu misunderstands this story is just pure douche-baggery. It boggles my mind how Rotten Tomatoes could give this a mere 80% while giving Mad Max a 97%. Scott, you are a tool.

Re: “Christmas Eve

I understand understand this bah-humbug review, but I disagree. This is a _Christmas_ movie, designed to capture the spirit of season. And it does. Beautifully. It will make you laugh, cry, think and want to be a better person. That's a welcome gift worth more than the price of admission.

Re: “Just Let Go

I loved this film. The screen play was quite engaging as the scenes were filled with meaning that were beyond most viewers eyes. The symbols, the acting, the cinematography was great!

Re: “Walt Before Mickey

This movie was very inspiring. I am really really taken aback of how much risk these film makers Had to take. A story with out violence on an individual no one or nor company dares to make. This was an incredible story and I was honored to see it.

I went to his class this morning and it was easily one of my favorite master classes I've ever been to! He was so nice and clear in his instructions. The way he taught was easy to understand and he was very efficient! Would love to go to another one of his classes someday!

Re: “Bonnie "Prince" Billy

This show was absolutely fantastic and mind-blowing, the best I'll see this year no doubt. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy was in fine form, penetratingly and powerfully enunciating every trenchant (and delightfully flippant) lyric and bending all the notes into new-never-before-played-despite-being-old fireworks. Mythic!! Wow!!!! He gave 200%. And all the backstories for songs!!! Matt Sweeny's presence took it up another notch, and David Ferguson was a nice surprise bonus. Not only did he do a fantastic set list, he opened up for requests near the end. (As usual, "New Partner" and "I See A Darkness" were probably the most vocalized requests.) I requested "No Match," but too quietly. He truly lives his art, and it shows. Constant singing and the sorting/arranging of poetry/ideas are the blood that animates his body. We were so lucky to get a rare appearance from him. I'm still riding the high. Thank you, BPB!

Re: “Victoria & Abdul

I saw Victoria and Abdul yesterday, and for once I was one of the younger people in the audience..I'm 68. But I've had a crush on Judi Dench for a long time and still watch The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Philomena at least yearly.
I loved the story and the characters, even if it wasn't all based on the truth. I can't imagine being in the Royal Family and I really liked how the showed what it's like living that way. All of the actors were terrific, including the late Tim Piggot Smith and Paul Higgins as Dr. Reid. All of the full regiment of British actors; I felt like I was watching Midsomer Murders.
Just a great movie overall.

Re: “The Revenant

I thought the breath on the camera lens was a great effect because the next shot was of clouds soaring above the mountains, one leading to the next. If that's what made this movie bad for you, I feel sorry for your inability to be entertained. Easily one of the best movies of the year!

Re: “The Revenant

Sorry. It's exhausting because 2:36 is easily an hour too long for a simple dime-a-dozen (plot-wise) revenge flick we've all seen 1000 times before, however well-acted and well-shot, or novel the setting. Though the silly self-reflexive "breath on the camera lens" shots merely caused me to roll my eyes, this film's real problem is that an hour of it needed to be on the cutting-room floor. This could have easily been accomplished by cutting our some of the repetitive hallucination scenes, long shot of the moon at night and other travelogue-esque shots, and lingering shots of Leo wincing in pain as he drags himself along in the snow. Simple good guy/bad guy revenge film? You can tell that tale in 1-1/2 hours. Beyond that? You're repeating yourself, your film is getting tedious, and you're "exhausting" your audience.
