Re: “In Bloom

Iosepa is pronounced like it is spelled, each vowel pronounced seperately. NOT "Yo-sepa" as you posted but I-(as in hill)-o (as in old) - se (e, as in elf) pa- (a as in papa)! The colony was NOT named for Joseph Fielding Smith, as stated in your article but for his Father, Joseph F. Smith!

Re: “Agent Orange

My name is Mike Yates and I am a Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veteran who has both Prostate and Thyroid Cancer. You may know that Prostate Cancer is related to Agent Orange Exposure and there is now evidence that Thyroid Cancer may be related.
There are two Bills in Congress, HR299 and S422 both referred to as the Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act that will provide benefits to those Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans are suffering from diseases that are related to being exposed to Agent Orange Exposure. These same Veterans where cover from 1991 when the Agent Orange Act of 1991(Public Law No: 102-4) were granted benefits but in 2002 the General Consul of the Veterans Administration decided to remove these Veterans from being cover despite the sprit of the Public Law No: 102-4. Also there is two Concurrent-Resolution, S Con Res 12 and H Con Res 45 that will Express the sense of Congress that those who served in the bays, harbors, and territorial seas of the Republic of Vietnam during the period beginning on January 9, 1962, and ending on May 7, 1975, should be presumed to have served in the Republic of Vietnam for all purposes under the Agent Orange Act of 1991.

I know the leaders in both House of CONGRESS do support SOME Veterans bills BUT when it comes to Bills related to Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans they stay away from them. You can see this in the past two Session of Congress. We have had HR543 in the 113th Session and HR969 in the 114th Session of Congress. In both you had a large number of Co-Sponsors but the Leadership would not bring the Bills to the Floor for a vote. There were always a number of reason why they wouldnt bring it to the floor but mostly it was due to the cost. As Cmdr John Wells said during the Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs Hearing on April 4, 2017:. "Frankly, We don't care how you pay for it!"- John Wells
It is now time for this to happen. We understand that Congress has to have a way to pay for the Bill, They dont seem to have a problem finding ways to pay for Bills related helping other countries(including Vietnam for the cleanup of Agent Orange (Public Law No: 114-113). so they shouldnt have a problem finding a way to pay for a Bill that is going to help our Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans, Vietnam was a Country we were at war with and we can find the money to clean up up the Toxins in Vietnam but not the funds to help the Veterans that served off the coast of that Country, this is very sad. (
It surprises me that people actually believe that the US Navy Ships that served off the Coast of Vietnam could not of been affected by Agent Orange. Agent Orange did not stop at the water's edge. By ways of the Rivers and Streams Agent Orange flowed into the Gulf of Tonkin where the ships were providing support to the ground troops. The US Navy ships would bring on water from the Sea that was then distilled and filter so that the sailors could have water to drink, cook, bathe, and all the other normal things that water is used for. During this process distillation of the water the dioxins in the water was actually enhance by a factor up to ten times the amount instead of being removed. So actually the Sailors off the coast of Vietnam received a larger dose of Dioxins than their brothers who serve Boots on the Ground in Vietnam.
So please support help us get the word out about HR299, S422, H Con Res 45, and S Con Res 12. Contact you Member of Congress and request that they support these Bills and Concurrent-Resolution if they are not doing so
Thank you for your time.

Re: “The Amazing Race

Your blurb about me is inaccurate, although I appreciate the rating of 1. I filed with the FEC in accordance with its directives the day I started to raise money due to the tweet I wrote challenging Jason Chaffetz' iphone vs. healthcare remark. Before that day, I had raised around $17,000 in an exploratory campaign. During the day of the tweet, I broke a fundraising record on Crowdpac. I called the FEC and they advised me to file, which I promptly did. The amount in my Crowdpac account at the time of my filing was between $80,000 and 100,000, not $400,000 as you reported.

Re: “Warrior Spirit

Great article. Raises many questions in regards to religion vs. culture. Probably been more or less the fight for centuries in many areas of the world- especially in the South Pacific as of late. Almost all of the islands have been converted to Christianity, and if not, Christianity is more than likely going to take over completely in time. I think it safe to say that if you have any interest in this matter, THOROUGH research is due before coming to any conclusions. However, if Puriri's story is as true as this article states, who knows just how much really goes on in this clash of culture and religion.

Re: “Male Victims of Domestic Violence Participate in Support Group

Wow, no greater truth have I seen than this article . My fianc has been living a three-year nightmare, abuse , harassment and emotional turmoil . He has been ignored by the police, judges, and attorneys. He has spent a week in jail, spent $15,000 defending himself, and lives with Constant fear of his ex hurting him. She even went so far as placing a shooting range human silhouette target with bullet holes through the heart, where he would see it, just to intimidate him . 15 false police reports, and still the nightmare continues . Where can I get some help for him. He's threatening to blow his head off on the court house stairs. There is NO justice for men in UTAH! Help!

Re: “Warrior Spirit

About Mormon chrarity... "The Mormon Church, for example, spends roughly .7% of its annual income on charity. Their study of 271 congregations found an average of 71% of revenues going to operating expensesCompare this to the American Red Cross, which uses 92.1% of revenues for physical assistance and just 7.9% on operating expenses. The authors also note that Wal-Mart, for instance, gives about $1.75 billion in food aid to charities each year, or twenty-eight times all of the money allotted for charity by the United Methodist Church and almost double what the LDS Church has given in the last twenty-five years."

Re: “Warrior Spirit

Boring! As has been mentioned, big surpise! Why this maori guy and his ethnic community aren't asking more questions about why the LDS church does nothing to preserve the cultures it is colonizing is the real imperative. Trading ancient wisdom for American COnsumerism built on a spiritual farce is the core of the matter. However, as long as this guy and others like him continue to live out the man-made god fable of life, there's not much you can do. What I'm saying is there is not a lot of middle ground here folks, accept the church, bye bye culture!!

Re: “Soap Box: May 4-10

Scotty Furash,

I just recently moved to Utah from Maryland where I found the sport of Camogie (or Hurling) and fell in love with it. I know there isn't a big Irish community in Utah, but I've been trying to find a way to keep with it. I've found several different older posts online of people looking to build a team/club, but not sure how to bring everyone together. Thoughts?

Re: “Warrior Spirit

I live in Temple View. I have half heartedly read this article. I understand that Church College was built for the reason to assist and educate the indigenous people. It did that. Our educational system now supports Maori and my children are doing well in it. I love the David O McKay building, it was where I learnt, worshiped, grew. It was my tabernacle. "Bricks and Mortar people" that's what a labour missionary told me. We don't pay tithing and serve with strings attached.
I now love the new stake centre. It is truly beautiful and will bless the lives of my children and childrens children. I am so grateful that tithes and offers have been spent on beautifying our corner of the world. Come and see. I do not pretend to know much, especially about the Church's business arm, we are all human, but I feel so very blessed. Our suburb is outstanding. Our new Pacific Church History centre is one of a kind. It honors our heritage and no one can take that away from me by tearing down a old building. My Uncle Dave (labour missionary) was a bricklayer for around 50 years. He new the life expectancy of concrete. My spiritual strength is stronger.

Re: “Warrior Spirit

Sorry, Moana, but I never said the LDS church is fully focused on real estate. What I _did_ say is that it is gobbling up real estate in several places, and I stand by that.

And seriously, the LDS church provides service without media involvement? That's laughable.

For fun, look up the Mormon Helping Hands program. Note two things: 1). It has among its stated purposes the following:

"Build Relationships with Opinion Leaders

"Church Public Affairs exists to build strategic relationships with opinion leaders who affect the reputation of the Church of Jesus Christ. Service is a powerful tool for influencing the beliefs and opinions of prominent individuals. Mormon Helping Hands is especially effective in developing beneficial relationships between Church leaders and government officials or other opinion leaders.

"Enhance the Reputation of the Church

"Mormon Helping Hands helps bring the Church out of obscurity and can greatly improve its reputation. Local media interest in these projects helps spread the knowledge of the Church to many who would not otherwise hear of it."

Note please the intent to draw media interest.

And 2). Ask your stake leaders who is responsible for the Mormon Helping Hands program in your stake. Because the handbook calls for it to be homed with the stake PUBLIC AFFAIRS representative. We do not wonder why.

The LDS church collects billions each year, and it refuses to provide even its own members any visibility into how much comes in, how it is spent, or how much its top leaders are paying themselves in "living allowances."

That is shameful.
