Re: “Ghosts of Venues Past

Burts died because the owners were crooks. The bartenders had to buy beer at the 7/11 just to keep up with drinks some nights. Local bands played for free and the bartenders had to buy them beer to play. The pipes in the basement were broken so we pumped sewage into the streets after closing some nights. Burts stayed alive for as long as it did because the bartenders and regulars kept it open.

Re: “In the House

I hope artists won’t be doing the math of how many people are in those rooms—and how much each one of them paid—while patiently waiting for their 3 song sets.

DV8 was so great, watching from the balcony, down on the main floor or basement. All epic. Saw 7 Seconds, Youth Brigade (LA), Henry Rollins (spoken word), Bouncing Souls in 1995. Great downtown SLC memories.
