Re: “The Local Music Issue 2017

In as much as I love reading an article about bands I loved while living in SLC during the "early to-mid-90's" (I remember exactly when, but...), this article is crap. Bloated, unnecessary, and fluff accompanied by an uncertain voice.

For example:

"At The Great Saltair one early-to-mid-'90s night, my friends and I attended a locals-only show headlined by local grungers The Obvious, who'd been getting played on X96. Being young, dumb and full of ourselves because we happened to play guitar (albeit poorly), we stood ready to judge all four bands harshly."

I suppose if I were in high school, or even in college, this would be acceptable. But Fred, dude, I mean, you could get to the point if you wanted to. Instead it's a bunch of filler...wait, are you still in high school?

"who'd been getting played." As opposed to "who'd been killing it on X96!" or, "who had gained substantial popularity on X96!" I mean, c'mon....

And "nerdy singer's glittery Getsch?" Dude...

"Two years later, Honest Engine finally finished their album. There was no internet music buffet in 1995, so I babied that disc like my birth certificate." As opposed to? And do people generally "baby" their birth certificates?

I feel bad that I had to read about bands i LOVED, PROMOTED AND SUPPORTED through this article. Sorry, not sorry, but try not to fluff your way through things you can't really speak to. I mean, because you wrote for this and that, doesn't mean you can write; it may mean you're the only one who wants to. Until now, as I write about this...anyway...

Good luck...

Nice to know, as well, Dale. I was just listening to "Detached," by The Obvious and remembering so many good times.

Re: “Best of Utah Music 2016

I'm from Colorado and have had the pleasure of working with Tony Holiday and Jordan Young. Extremely talented musicians and Very deserving of these awards. I put up a "who did we forget" mention with Tom Bennett with Sweet Salt Records. Tom has a great sound and show but more importantly, he is such a genuine guy with a true passion of linking music and audiences and always encouraging other musicians. His comment above reminds me again why Tom is such a stellar professional. I hope to see him on your list next year! Congratulations to all the winners, there is SO MUCH TALENT coming out of Utah!

While I can appreciate the local talent acknowledgement, where's the love for the classical side of the best of Utah music? SO much talent here in the area!
