24 Hours Show at Kayo Gallery

With today’s short attention spans, ADD, ADHD and associated maladies that we don’t even want to take the time to spell out, there is a sped-up version of everything from chess to competitive eating. The visual arts—usually the province of painstaking, detailed work, such as in the case of oil painters waiting for sections to dry before new colors can be applied—is rendered into sharper relief under pains of a deadline. The truism “as interesting as watching paint dry” doesn’t quite apply this week at Kayo Gallery.

The 24 Hours Show is Kayo Gallery’s version of this phenomenon: Each participating artist has been given 24 hours to create a work of art. After the initial 24-hour period, the only alterations that can be made are for presentation of the works. There’s a reason for this: The stricture forces artists to make unconventional choices, take risks and explore new concepts born under the pressure of the timepiece.

Several of these artists are repeats at the annual event, like collage artist Chad Crane and multi-style threat Trent Call. The works generated don’t appear tossed off but, in the hands of some of the most skilled artists in town, appear like strangely beautiful mutations of someone with an already inimitable style, like the swirling shapes of a Sri Whipple or the medieval-looking prints of Chad Tolley. The alchemy of too much pizza and too little sleep is able to produce marvels.
