Gavin's Underground: End Of An Era

Nine and a half years of local entertainment blogging comes to an end.
I knew one I'd be writing a post like this; City Weekly has decided to discontinue Gavin's Underground. To be clear, nothing terrible happened between myself and the ownership/editorial team; I'm still on their freelance roster.

Torris Fairley

A quick interview with the up-and-coming SLC-based comedian.
It's been fun for me to watch the local standup comedy scene grow and transform over the years, and be able to cover it for a good portion of the time I've been writing my blog. I've enjoyed sitting in the back and checking out new talent at open mics, hanging out with people I've chatted with over the years as they blow the doors off Wiseguys, seeing new and old talent take hold of the stage and work their magic.

Cirque Asylum

A look into the dance school teaching unique forms of aerial arts.
Watching  performers who take risks is always a thrill to watch. The amount of strength, skill, coordination and sheer talent required to pull off those kinds of performances  is just incredible and should be applauded every time you see it happen.

Goldmyth

A chat with the opening act from this past Friday's show at Kilby Court
I've always enjoyed going to Kilby Court to see shows. I've been going almost since day one, when it was considered really sketchy to be going to the west end of town, just two blocks shy of Area 51, to see an all-ages show out of what is essentially a garage.

May Gallery Stroll: Samantha Calmes

A look at the artwork currently on display at Vive Juicery
This month's Gallery Stroll is a weird one. I had received an agreement from Samantha Calmes (also of the band Vinyl Tapestries) to do an interview for her showcase at Vive Juicery.

Mom And The New Dad

Revisiting with a pair of soon-to-be-wed friends and their new podcast.
When you do a job like this, you often get to know the people you highlight a lot more than just whatever was in the interview. I've had the pleasure of knowing Chris Holifield before his podcast I Am Salt Lake took off, and Krissie Shelley over the past few years while she was a standup comedian.

Brooklyn Ottens

Staring deeply into the patterns of the SLC-based artist's work.
A few years ago, I had the privilege of checking out the art of Brooklyn Ottens, as well as work with her on a few artistic projects. Her designs and pattern pieces at the time were simply stunning, as her work went into lavish detail at the tiniest levels, and stood out from a lot of the other works.

C Street Studios

A chat with the director behind the independent filming company.
There's a number of production companies in town working hard to create cool films and content, but they don't always get the spotlight like they should. One of such company is C Street Studios, which currently produce short films as well as commercial content for clients.

In The Loop: 5/13/17. Reading Comics On A Gust Of Wind

Cool events to check out from May 14-27.
Hey, kids! So if you didn't know, last weekend was Free Comic Book Day, and below you can see I got myself a nice haul without taking every single comic that the shop could hold.

Alex Posselli

A chat with the fashion designer before her RAW showcase in June.
The RAW Artists Awards highlight talent from across the nation, and even has a part of their site dedicated to emerging creators in multiple media here in Salt Lake City. Often you'll see people go from starting their careers to being top-tier talent within a couple years, all by getting their start there.
