As the Sundance Film Festival rolls into Utah, local multiplexes offer mostly testosterone-fueled new releases, plus one of the best of 2017 arriving at last.

12 Strong (pictured) attempts a real-life story with unabashed military hero-worship, and pulls it off about as effectively as one could hope for. The blunt Very Important Lessons in the revisionist Western Hostiles could have used a hell of a lot more revision.

Eric D. Snider finds the wholesome, vaguely Christian romantic drama of Forever My Girl too innocuous to be "bad."

Andrew Wright finds kinetic action, a shaky script and a hilariously excessive Gerard Butler in the ersatz Heat of Den of Thieves.

In this week's feature review, Phantom Thread makes the big-screen swan song of Daniel Day-Lewis a fascinating story of relationship power dynamics.
