One of the surest harbingers of Utah winter is the arrival of the annual surge of winter sports films—those high-energy showcases for skiers and snowboarders to show their stuff in locations around the world. As you start waxing your own gear to prepare for the inevitable snows, here are your opportunities to get into the right frame of mind in a theater seat.
This Is Home: The Faction Collective — including Salt Lake City's own Johnny Collinson — presents its first feature, scoping out the greatest free-skiing locations on the planet. The Depot, 400 W. South Temple, Oct. 12, 8 p.m., tickets $10-$13.
Warren Miller's Line of Descent: For more than 65 years, the granddaddy of ski-movie production companies has been bringing audiences amazing athletes in breathtaking locations. Utah locations for the 2017 tour include Abravanel Hall (Oct. 13-14), Orem's Scera Theatre (Oct. 17-19), Park City's Eccles Theater (Oct. 20-21), Peery's Egyptian Theater in Ogden (Oct. 24-26), Megaplex Theaters - Cedar City (Oct. 30), Megaplex Theaters - St. George (Nov. 1) and Mount Logan Middle School in Logan (Nov. 3-4).
Matchstick Productions: Drop Everything: A light-hearted, comedic free-skiing adventure featuring Michelle Parker, Cody Townsend, Connery Lundin and many more. Sundance Resort, Oct. 23, time and tickets TBD.
Teton Gravity Research: Rogue Elements: Locations from Alaska to Bolivia mark this latest TGR effort, which also captures the snowy Rocky Mountain winter of 2016-2017. Our Lady of the Snows, Alta, Nov. 14, 7 p.m., tickets $5 at the door.
