Beyond Essentials Sept. 27-Oct. 4

Ririe-Woodbury's Parallax, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Marvel Universe Live and more

Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company opens its 2017-2018 season with Parallax  (pictured), featuring a trio of works new to local audiences: Kate Weare's Salt Lake City premiere Unstuck; Raja Feather Kelly's world premiere Pantheon; and artistic director Daniel Charon's world premiere Exilic Dances. Performances are Sept. 28-30, 7:30 p.m. at Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center (138 W. 300 South), $15-$35, with a special 1-hour family matinee version Sept. 30 at 1 p.m., $10 individual or $45 for a 5-ticket family pack. The University of Utah concludes its campus-wide Chinese Culture Week with a performance of music and dance by the Sichuan University Art Troupe at Kingsbury Hall (1395 E. Presidents Circle), Oct. 1, 6:30 p.m. Admission is free, but ticket is required; reserve your ticket here.

The Wasatch Speaker Series hosts CNN chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta at Abravanel Hall (123 W. South Temple) on Wednesday, Oct. 4, 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available only as part of the season package, which this year also includes Jane Pauley and former Vice President Joe Biden. Popular super-heroes like the Guardians of the Galaxy, Iron Man, Doctor Strange and Black Panther come to life in the the blockbuster theatrical production Marvel Universe Live: Age of Heroes at Maverik Center (3200 S. Decker Lake Dr., West Valley City), Sept. 28-Oct. 1, times vary. Tickets are $15-$75, available here.
