An unusually diverse slate for a summer movie weekend features animation, a comedy sequel and a biopic about a legendary soccer star.

The Angry Birds Movie  (pictured) shows that almost nothing has evolved in the 15 years since Shrek introduced a go-to formula for lazy feature animation. The Meddler may not offer the antagonistic mother-daughter relationship promised by the title and the marketing, but it still has a wonderful performance from Susan Sarandon as a widow who hasn't yet processed her grief.

MaryAnn Johanson finds Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising adding some progressive positivity to its gross-out formula, but its fragmented attempts at humor aren't successful nearly enough.

David Riedel finds it hard to imagine that a biopic could hit more clichés than you'll find in Pelé: Birth of a Legend.

In this week's feature review, Shane Black practices the rare art of bringing surprise to movies with his wild and goofy 1970s-set buddy detective caper The Nice Guys.
