Wine Wednesday: Ted's Wine of the Year

When I look back over the hundreds of wines I had the privileged of tasting during 2015, there are a number of standouts. Some were expensive; others were economical.
But the wine that remained in my memory the longest this year was Concha y Toro Cabernet Sauvignon Puente Alto Don Melchor 2010 ($89). Frankly, it's remarkable that this fine wine sells for a little under $90 in Utah, while in most of the country you'll pay closer to it's suggested retail price of $125 per bottle.
Although I allowed my Don Melchor to age a little longer than the folks at Wine Spectator, they named the 2010 vintage their #9 pick of the Top 10 Wines of 2014.
Chile's Puente Alto wine appellation is known for producing formidable reds and the region's growing season for this particular vintage was near perfect.
This is an elegant, refined wine with cherry, spice and plum notes, a blend of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc. Aging for 15 months in French oak barrels helped tame the tannins, but this fine wine will continue to evolve for decades to come, in my opinion. I'd buy a case to put away and taste a bottle on a yearly basis for the next dozen enjoyable years of Don Melchor.
