In Italian, inizi means "beginnings." INIZI Charbono 2013 ($25) is Two Worlds Wine Company's new journey (a "beginning") into Charbono - a varietal that was widely planted in Napa Valley in the last century. Today, only about 80 acres remain.

The INIZI Charbono vineyard in southern Calistoga is owned and farmed by Heitz Bros Vineyards, affectionately called "Flynnville." The vineyard is one-and-a-half acres of 40 year old head trained, dry-farmed vines.

Pour the wine into a glass and it looks like you're filling it with black ink. But, don't be frightened! Although the looks of the Charbono screams TANNINS!, it's actually quite soft on the palate, although concentrated. The wine has enough acidity to balance out the tannins, and is rich with an almost creamy finish.

Try INIZI Charbono with a hearty dish such as my Pasta Bolognese. You'll love it.
