The Utah Arts Festival may be dominating the weekend, but there are still albums releases happening and other shows for you to check out when their gates close. We'll start with online releases, the first coming to us from the band The Squatches. This is an alt-indie project based out of SLC, a solo project from musician Dave Dangerfield, who had an awesome full-length album back in 2012 call Ashby. For some reason, Dangerfield has chosen to eliminate his project's entire back catalog in favor of promoting his brand new release, To Remain. The album itself is a balance of hard-hitting rock with an acoustic lead guitar and low-level power vocals, it's worth checking out. You can purchase a copy for $10 off his Bandcamp page.


We'll switch over to garage rock for a moment and check out the latest from SLC band Chalk. The four-piece band are no strangers to the music scene, having already produced two awesome albums over the past four years. The Hex Key EP in 2012 and their self-titled full-length in 2013. Since the second release, they've been primarily playing the SLC punk scene, becoming staples of Diabolical Records in the process. This brand new EP called Lil is their first new material in nearly two years, and has a much more lo-fi feeling behind the recording. You can snag it for just $2 on Bandcamp.


Moving into metal we have the latest from four-piece SLC group Odium Totus. These guys are a badass band to see live when you get the chance and had a killer EP nearly three years ago called Nullam Congue Nihil. They've returned with an EP (but it's technically a single with only two tracks) called Let It All End. I'm not quite sure where to pin it, but something about this release sounds a lot tighter than the first, still keeping the black metal touch, but with a greater sense of confidence than before. Metal fans, this is a must grab, which you can do for $2 on their Bandcamp.


We'll change the beat to hip-hop for a moment and talk about the latest release from Eddie Lion, an emcee based out of Logan who has been making minor waves in Northern Utah. Keeping the lion theme, Eddie also serves as the lead singer in the rock band Once The Lion and is a member of the hip-hop group Black Lion. This album, The Glory, serves as an awesome solo debut that's definitely worth your time to listen. You can download it for $7 on his Bandcamp page.


Getting to release shows, we've got 2 for you tonight, the first being in Ogden as we see the latest from Dr.Grimm & Mista Ice Pick. This is an Ogden rap duo who have been making a lot of noise over the past year, with opportunities to play major gigs from In The Venue, Saltair and Loading Dock with touring acts. The duo have been hard at work putting together their debut album, The Undiscovered Mixtape with a bevy of local talent backing them. You can snag a copy at Kamikazes as they play their release show with Sammi Auto & Havok, Crazy Steve, Icy Blu, Smoke, Clawson, Sir Flow Fleezy, Und3rstyl3 and DJ Jordan Russel opening. Tickets are just $5 and the doors open at 7 p.m.


Finally, in SLC over at the Murray Theater, we'll see the debut release from Thalgora. This is a four-piece atmospheric death metal band featuring Joe Feil, Aaron Brancheau, Kasen Guymon and Ashton Nelson.The band formed in 2012 under the original name Uroboric Deity, later changing their name within the past year. This is one of those bands where you just kick back with a beer and enjoy the experience. They'll be releasing their debut album under the new name titled Silent Sorcerer tonight, and you can snag a copy as they play with Winter Burial, Hisingen, Silent Sorcerer and Dezecration opening the show. Tickets are $12 at the door and the music starts at 7 p.m.
