Do my fists count as weapons?

Dear GYA, I’ve been waiting for this Comic Con thing for months. I don’t even know what it is. All I know is the neighbor kid across the street won’t stop running around his yard in his Batman costume in preparation. I won’t wear a costume, but I’ve heard “weapons” need to be checked in to make sure they’re not actual weapons. As a karate master (I’ve only watched six of the eight VHS tapes in the “Become a Karate Master” series, I know enough), do I need to check my fists of fury at the gate before gawking at celebrities and waiting in lines for hours? —Karate Todd, Midvale
No, Todd. You can only check your fists as weapons once you’ve finished all the tapes. However, if you don’t want to risk getting tackled at the door of Utah’s largest geek and pop culture gathering, there are other places you can check out this weekend:
Friday’s Events:
The Utah State Fair is in full swing this weekend at the Utah State Fairpark. Get your funnel cake and rodeo on. Gates open at 10 a.m., and tickets start at $22.
Starting on Friday, the Salt Lake Greek Festival is back at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, going through Sunday. Tickets are $3, but the endless supply of dolmathes costs extra.
Straying from the Fruit Bats to pursue a solo indie venture, Eric D. Johnson performs under the monkier EDJ at Kilby Court. Show starts at 7 p.m. and tickets are $10.
Saturday’s Events:
The Oddball Comedy and Curiosity Festival takes over the Usana Amphitheatre, featuring headliners Louis C.K., Sarah Silverman, Aziz Ansari, and other comedians you think you saw on TV once. Doors open at 5 p.m. and tickets range from $35 to $80.
If Comic Con is a bit overwhelming, check out Catherine Carlson as she sings the songs of Disney at the Draper Historic Theatre. Saturday’s performance is at 7:30 p.m. and individual tickets are $7, or $25 if you have a family of 8 or fewer.
Rock bands Paradise Fears, Hollywood Ending, and William Beckett will play at The Complex. The show starts at 6:30 p.m. and tickets are $12.
Sunday’s Events:
Long-running Salt Lake staple Saturday’s Voyeur 2014 entertains tonight at the Salt Lake Acting Company. Tickets are $45 and up, show starts at 6 p.m.
Alt-rock band The Breeders headline at the Urban Lounge with band The Funs. Show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are $25.
