Hello to all you row-hoeing, weed-tilling, tomato-pulling, squash-testing, pumpkin-watering, flower-picking, gonna-get-my-garden-in-order enthusiasts! We're in the home stretch of summer, which for many means a changeover in the gardening styles as they know they're beginning the last stretch for anything awesome to come out of it. But for those of us without one, all we can do is head to the Farmer's Market and snag what tasty treats we can. Well, that may change for many soon, but we'll get to that in a second. First, here's some random sidewalk art I saw on the way home last night.


In place of the usual 337 Wall, let's discuss the actual developments to the property. Because ever since the 337 Project finally came down in 2008 (as seen by this photo on demolition day), the property has essentially been an empty lot for ugly moving vans and a new cardboard vacation home for the homeless camping near the Crossroads Urban Center as the property kept seeking funding to build an arts building. Well, all that will soon change as the property has just been sold to the city of Salt Lake to be re-purposed into a community garden. The former owner, Adam Price, confirmed the purchase on Thursday, done some through the Open Space Acquisition program, which will most likely turn the property over to Wasatch Community Gardens for development. Adam Price had the following to say on the new developments.


"The 337 Project was, among other things, always an exploration for Dessi [Price] and me about how to make space for community voices. We therefore are very happy that the final incarnation of the 337 Project will be as a public garden owned by Salt Lake City. Like so many things about the 337 Project, this was not the ending we had expected, but now that we are here it feels like the exactly right one."


Going into events, this week looks pretty grim in events beyond concerts, until you hit Friday where you'll have Gallery Stroll as your main artistic destination, followed by Comedy & Other Options being hosted by Jason Harvey at Sandy Station. You'll see local comedians Michael Moon, Rachel Jensen and Steve Uribe Jr. with Melissa Merlot headlining the evening. Just $3 to see this awesome showcase of talent.



On August 18, the Filmmaker Workshop Series will kick off in downtown SLC. This is a 10-day workshop series, this time featuring local director Sohrab Mirmont. Basically filmmakers will take their gear to specific locations over a two week period and participate in filming and working on techniques dictated by the guest director, which is highly informative and helpful for anyone looking to get into the art. On August 22, the Hip Hop Roots SLC crew will throw their monthly show, this time in celebration of Burnell Washburn's birthday over at the Lo-Fi Cafe. And damn, is this a lineup to behold as they'll have a literal dozen performers rocking the stage, along with live graffiti, a bboy showcase, food and drink specials, some local vendors around to sell their goods and some free stuff for the crowd. When you look at all this and realize the show is only $10, you realize you're getting a pretty good ticket price.


And then finally on August 23, The Rose Exposed takes over the Rose Wagner Theatre. If you're unfamiliar with this program, it's basically an all-day event hosted by all the performing art companies who reside at the Rose Wagner, with all proceeds from the tickets going to The Road Home. There's a ton of events that a paragraph wouldn't do justice on, check out the Facebook link to the event for more info.


As for the blog, well, a lot of things are in the air. I can guarantee you artistic coverage with a visit to Gallery Stroll, but beyond that, it's going to be a surprise. As always, we'll see what happens.
