Chances are that you and yours will be celebrating Independence Day with a backyard cookout, BBQ in the park, a picnic, or perhaps just taking in a fireworks show with your favorite libation. Well, here's a terrific all-purpose wine that would be a big bang with your firecracker fest.

Saracina Winery in Mendocino's wine country produces a very versatile, interesting, and inexpensive white wine called Atrea The Choir ($15.99). It's a lip-smacking blend of 54 percent Roussanne and 46 percent Viognier—a Rhone-style wine that is picnic perfect.

The Viognier lends peach, apricot and pears aromas to the wine, while Roussanne gives it honeyed undertones. It's rich without having gone through malolactic fermentation, with crisp acidity that will pair nicely with everything from boiled spicy crawfish or Asian foods to barbecued meats. It's like a sweet sip of summer in a top-down convertible cruising the PCH.
