Sen. Jim Dabakis, D-Salt Lake City, creator of SaveTheTribune.com will be hosting a rally Saturday, May 31, to gather community support for the embattled Salt Lake Tribune. Dabakis is hoping to make some noise that will be heard all the way in Washington D.C., where the Department of Justice is said to be investigating the joint-operating agreement between The Trib and The Deseret News that critics say is designed to kill the Trib.---

Dabakis' petition has already gained more than 15,000 signatures in its call for a federal investigation into the JOA agreement between The Trib and the D-News that as it was recently negotiated in October 2013, gives 70 percent of ad revenue in either paper to the D-News.

Critics also take issue with how the JOA now gives the D-News' a three-to-two majority on the board of MediaOne, the entity that manages publishing and distribution for both daily papers. In a press release Dabakis blasted this as an unfair veto power on behalf of the D-News for any potential buyer looking to acquire The Trib.

The D-News should not decide who will own their competitor and the sale ought to be open,” Dabakis' statement reads.

The event is free and open to the public and will be co-hosted by The Trib's own Pulitzer-nominated cartoonist Pat Bagley. Check it out, Saturday, May 31, at 1 p.m on the west side of the Salt Lake City & County Building, 451 S. State.
