Local Releases: Solo Men, Grouped Women & Long-Timers

This weekend, we've got a couple of release shows (for those of you not running around or dressing up) to check out, as well as a handful of quick online-only albums. --- First up is a debut EP from AJ Downs, an Ogden electronic musician and designer who hasn't really set up anything music-wise beyond his website and Bandcamp. He put out this simple five-track EP by the name of Smoothie last week; it sounds pretty nice, and it's cheap as hell for only $1.
Speaking of bands we have little info for, there's a hip-hop group going under the name New Hype with music up online. They've got a bit of a punk edge going for them, and might remind listeners of early Beastie Boys. You can download their self-titled album now for whatever you'd like to pay off their Bandcamp page.
Next up, Us Thieves have a brand-new album up—actually, it's an old album going under the title (Not) The Future Album. This is an old demo tape the band had circulating around back in 2010 that they thought they'd lost the master copy to until now, and you get to have it for absolutely free on their Bandcamp page.
While we're sitting on Bandcamp, the next debut album to spring from there is from a project called Panthermilk. This is a solo-project from Logan-based musician Benton Wood who has been experimenting with folk, beach rock, psychedelic and disco themes to make this four-track EP called Orion. You can download it for whatever you'd like to pay on, where else, Bandcamp.
Going to release shows, the first up tonight is happening down in Provo from The Blue Aces. The all-women rock band has been growing up pretty quickly in the public eye, starting out under the tutelage of Joshua James who helped launch them into the Provo music scene and produce their debut self-titled album back in 2012. Since then, they've changed management, adjusted their style and are now putting out a new EP called Gave You My Heart. If the music video for the single "I Don't Wanna Know” is any indication, this should be a tight album. You can pick up a copy tonight at Velour as the band (seen above, courtesy of The Blue Aces) plays with Ocean Commotion and June Cat. The show starts at 8 p.m., and tickets are just $7.
And finally, tomorrow night we'll see the debut release from Herban Empire, an SLC alternative reggae band that's been jamming around the city since 2006. The band has gone through several changes over the years, including having members move away for periods of time, but they've always remained a dependable mid-card band who can bring the heat. Now, they've got a self-titled EP that will be released tomorrow night. You can catch their show at A Bar Named Sue, and tickets are $5.
