Dear GYA: I'm not from around here, so what the hell is Pioneer Day, and what am I supposed to do? Someone told me it's some statehood holiday, but I still don't get it. I'm grateful for the day off, but what am I supposed to be celebrating or, at the very least, doing? – John Murray, Park City---

John, I'm also a transplant, so at first, Pioneer Day seemed weird to me, too. Anyway, think of it as Fourth of July but just for Utah; that's how I came to terms with it. I know it may seen confusing, but don't worry,  there's plenty going on around town for you to show your Utah pride and enjoy your day off.

Cowboys and cattle are a big part of Utah's country culture, so check out the Days of ’47 Rodeo. There will be bull riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling and more! The show starts at 6:30 p.m. and admission starts at $12.50.

Since you've definitely got some anxiety about Pioneer Day, check out William Tyler at Kilby Court. His soothing music and cheery melodies should put your anxiety to rest. Tickets are $10, and the show starts at 7 p.m.

If you're still skeptical of Pioneer Day and just want to avoid the whole thing, head to Urban Lounge and see The Maldives perform. They're alternative country tunes are sure to get you feeling good. Star Anna and The Bully open the show. Tickets are $5 and the doors open at 9 p.m.
