It's interesting that Dunkin' Donuts chose National Donut Day (June 7, 2013) to introduce not a new donut, but its new Donut Bacon Breakfast Sandwich. ---
Yes, you read that correctly: I said donut bacon sandwich.
At a time when many restaurants are lightening up their menus with slimmer food options, Dunkin' Donuts seems to be taking the opposite approach. The new sandwich is a glazed doughnut, split in half, with a fried egg and bacon in the middle. The Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich weighs in at 360 calories, which is actually less than its healthier-sounding turkey sausage sandwich, clocking in at 390 calories. So, I suppose they actually ARE slimming down.
The folks at Dunkin' Donuts say they want to "help our guests discover their love of combining sweet and savory." Um ... okay. Thanks for the culinary education.
BTW, I spotted a soon-to-come Dunkin' Donuts location in Bountiful, on 500 South, in the spot where Iceberg used to be. There's also a Dunkin' Donuts store opening soon in downtown SLC. Until then, you'll have to leave Utah to get your mitts on a Donut Bacon Breakfast Sandwich. Or, you could do what most people would do: Eat an egg, some bacon, and a doughnut -- separately.
