Sundance 2013: Locals Best Bets 1/21

A couple of romantic comedies, and a even a documentary love story of sorts, are among the solid options for Salt Lake City/Ogden Sundancers. ---
Cutie and the Boxer is the documentary, a fascinating and distinctive profile of Japanese artists Ushio and Noriko Shinohara. The younger, less-established Noriko becomes the focus, as the film explores a woman trying to find her own artistic voice after decades of sacrificing her own aspirations to the career of her volatile husband.
The romance is funnier and frothier in two entries from the U.S. Dramatic competition. Ogden gets a look at Austenland, the adaptation of Utah author Shannon Hale's novel about a young woman living out her literary fantasies at an English resort; Hale and director/co-writer Jerusha Hess do a fine job of transferring the romance and frisky tone of the book to the screen. Perhaps even friskier is writer/director Lake Bell's In a World..., set in the world of Hollywood voice-over performers. Bell herself stars as the daughter of a legendary movie-trailer voice, trying to establish herself professionally while trying to find herself personally. The story gets a bit scattered over too many characters and sub-plots, but Bell delivers some of the biggest laughs of the festival so far.
