In The Loop: 11/17/12. Season's Feedings

Hello to all you sweater-cleaning, hood-scrounging, glove-fitting, coat-dusting, weather-hating, we're-in-for-a-wet-season enthusiasts! --- Every year, without fail, someone says, “Oh, this is gonna be the year we get snowed in and get the next flood.” Well, I say bring it on. I've had a dream since when I was a kid and saw the 1983 flood pictures to take a canoe down State Street, and I'd like to fulfill that dream. But for now, I'll have to settle for my Thanksgiving tradition: shooting people on Halo over a turkey sandwich. In lieu of a 337 update, here's a piece of artwork from downtown Salt Lake City:
Before I delve into events, there's a project happening in the land of podcasts that is looking for support. Leesa Myers, the columnist for QSaltLake who writes “A Mom's View,” is looking to start up her own show focused on mothers with LGBT children, which in a community such as ours in a state such as Utah we certainly could use. In order to start up the show, Myers needs some startup money for equipment and software, which any podcast group will tell you does not come cheap. If you're an LGBT supporter in Utah, this is a no-brainer. Visit her IndieGoGo link to donate what you can and help bring an informative and helpful show to life.
Going to events, with the exception of local concerts and the occasional national act, Thanksgiving shot all extracurricular events to hell, so this week is pretty much dead in the water. The Sunday after slowly picks back up as the Geek Show Podcast will present their next movie night at Brewvies, and in the spirit of stuffing ourselves, they'll be showing a double feature of Motel Hell and Soylent Green. The movies are free but the food and drinks aren't; come join the panelists for their films, followed by CW'sBill Frost bringing you The Walking Dead with Big Shiny Robot.
Since it's mostly concerts, I might as well focus on the big local one happening Wednesday, Nov. 28. Joshua James (photo by Aly Johnson) will be playing two shows (with another two on Thursday) as a formal local celebration of his fifth studio album, From The Top Of Willamette Mountain. If you attend one concert at Velour all year, this is the one, as every show will be sold out with passionate crowds. Head down and check out one, if you can.
And then Friday, Nov. 30, KRCL will present its third-annual Polar Jamboree. If you haven't been to one of these, they're kinda fun as it's an evening of music and holiday fun with the KRCL staff and personalities. All the money goes toward funding KRCL, while you get to meet with and talk to the very people your money is helping to fund ... with drinks! Tickets are just $30.
As for the blog: I'll be hitting up the latest Gallery Stroll, looking at the latest short-film night, exploring the works of a local photographer, checking out the final week of a new attraction to hit town, chatting with a stand-up comedian and looking at the latest production from SB Dance. At least, that's the plan; who the hell knows what will happen as the holidays always play havoc with this blog? As always, we'll see what pans out.
