If nothing gives you the creeps this Halloween more than the thought of Utah becoming the guinea pig for the nation’s first-ever tar sands strip mine, then you might want to come out to the free screening of Petropolis, a documentary film surveying the scars left behind from Alberta’s tar-sands mines.---

From acclaimed cinematographer Peter Mettler comes Petropolis, a film using aerial photos to chronicle the ugliness left behind from the tailings piles of Alberta’s tar-sands-mining operations. While a different process is being pitched for the proposed tar-sands mine expected to go operational near Utah’s scenic Book Cliffs, activists worry that the Utah operation will still leave its own scar upon some of the state’s most untouched wilderness.

Come out in your Halloween costume, if you like, and learn more at the Utah Tar Sands Resistance’s movie night “Tar Sands: It’s a Whole New Monster.” A discussion will follow the movie. Check it out for free at The City Main Library, 210 E. 400 South, Wednesday, Oct. 31, 7 p.m.
