Wine Wednesday: Maestracci Corse Calvi Clos Reginu

When I shop at the 255 S. 300 East Wine Store in Salt Lake City, I can usually count on learning something new. The employees there are well-versed in the ways of wine and I've often gotten great recommendations from them. --- A case in point is this week's featured wine. One of the 3rd & 3rd store employees - I think his name is Kelly - turned me on to a wine I'd have probably not otherwise have tried, or even noticed: Domaine Maestracci Corse Calvi Clos Reginu 2010 ($15.99).
Domaine Maestracci is named for owner/winemaker Roger Maestracci, who founded the winery. Today, his son-in-law Michel Raoust runs the winery and makes quintessential Mediterranean wines.
The wine is from the French island of Corsica in the Mediterranean Sea. It's a surprising and unique red wine blend, made from an unusual combination of 30% Niellucciu, 30% Grenache, 15% Sciaccarellu, 15% Syrah, 5% Mouvedre and 5% Carignan.
It's a light, lively, refreshing red wine -- the sort of thing that would fit in well with an outdoor barbecue. It's super-juicy -- not too complex -- with tart cranberry flavors and a floral nose: totally gluggable. This is a really charming little Corsican wine that would pair nicely with a wide range of foods, from grilled chicken or salmon to pizzas and pastas. I'd especially like to try it with a plate of grilled sardines.
