Utah Arts Festival 2012: Nathan Snyder

If you look in your Utah Arts Festival program, Provo's Nathan Snyder is listed under the "Digital" category. But the subject of his digital photographs may be an even more fascinating work of art he creates. ---

The tumbling, colorful images in his prints—which look like some fluorescent underwater plant life—are actually close-up images of Snyder's own glass-art creations. The hand-crafted marbles and pendants are filled with brilliant detail, demonstrating the skills he has honed since starting working with glass as just a high school student. He describes the process of creating a perfectly round sphere as the hardest part of the process; collectors who look for one-of-a-kind marbles like Snyder's tend to be fanatical about orbs with no flat spots or other surface imperfections, and that's what he delivers.

So it's somewhat ironic that the relatively new facet of his creative career is what got him into the Arts Festival. It was the encouragement of those who admired the prints that got him to apply for the festival, which he's attending this year for the first time. Both the photographic works and marbles are on display at Snyder's booth (#6).
