Local Releases: Starvist, New Electric Sound, The Lower Lights

As you may have noticed, there's a TON of festival coverage happening this week, so today we're going to focus on three important releases (two with shows) and cover more secretive ones next week. --- First up is the debut EP from Starvist. The three-piece hardcore-metal band from SLC and Provo formed in the fall of 2010, comprised of Chase Cluff, Matthew Wiley and Tyson Clegg. They've been a mainstay middle band for the past year or so, the kind of group that will blow apart a room and leave you wanting more by the end of the night. It's no shock, then, that their first release would be an EP, as the five-track Taker Mythology shows the band at their finest -- very heavy, very loud, almost like it's ripping your fucking ears off! You can pick up a copy tonight as the band will be playing the Taylorsville location of Graywhale; we don't have the complete lineup as this was a last-minute decision to move the release show to today, but who cares? It will be well worth it. Show starts at 7 p.m.
For those of you not quite into metal, Velour will be playing host to the release show for The New Electric Sound. The band (seen above) was put together by lead singer/guitarist Scott Vance, who pulled members from bands like Bearcats, Paper Torn, The Monikers and Can't Stop Won't Stop to form a kind of supergroup focused on a kind of indie/surf rock sound. The group have been earning one hell of a following down in Utah County, which you can read more about in this City Weekly piece by Spencer Flanagan from February. Tonight, the band will be releasing their self-titled full-length debut album, which is actually pretty damn catchy and deserves some local radio play. You can catch the band tonight and pick up a copy at Velour as they play with Ryan Darton from California and local girl-band The Blue Aces; just $6, starting at 8 p.m.
Speaking of supergroups, this Tuesday we'll see the latest release from The Lower Lights. One of the few groups that can boast to have over 30 members, who themselves are from nearly 50 different musical projects between them, the gospel-hymn-singing band perform the finest that the small green book on LDS pianos can provide. The group have already had three fairly successful albums, which included a Christmas album, plus a live album from a 2011 showcase. We'll be discussing this band more thoroughly in my other blog this week, but the big thing to point out for now is their new album, which comes out this Tuesday. A Hymn Revival: Volume 2 is a 22-track set of Christian-themed songs such as “Calling You,” “Battle Hymn Of The Republic,” “Where He Leads Me” and “I Saw The Light,” to name just a few. The album will be available for purchase on their Bandcamp page for $13. If you'd like to see the group live, they'll be playing in the early afternoon on Saturday at the Utah Arts Fest, and they just may have copies of this and all their other material for sale.
