Utah Arts Festival Artist Marketplace

While you might look forward to surprises at the 2012 Utah Arts Festival, you can still expect the Artist Marketplace, which features more than 155 artists—chosen from 600 applicants—representing exceptional local and national talent in a range of media. --- Ceramics, 2-D media, 3-D mixed media, digital art, photography, drawing, pastel, fiber, glass, graphics, printmaking, jewelry, metalwork, painting, sculpture, wearable art and wood are all represented.
Among the marketplace’s four invited, un-juried artists is local mixed-media artist Blake Palmer, whose work embodies much of the urban essence that is the ambiance of the Arts Festival itself. Palmer incorporates imagery of women, landscape and urban structure into his work, which creates a sense of the hollowness of industry and cold urbanity juxtaposed with bold color and soft outlines of the feminine form. These stark comparisons capture extremes of the urban landscape that one perceives daily but rarely sees.
Salt Lake City’s Lori Mehan works inventively with ceramics inspired by nature. She says, “My goal is to make my work more expressive … I want it to be bolder and brighter.” Indeed, her work is alive with distinctive patterns and variations of lively color. Local painter David Estes paints lush, rich still-life images of the everyday, describing a painter as “an alchemist … just a few brushstrokes away from turning pigment, light and imagination into art or into madness.” Local photographer Troy Hunter’s nocturnes capture the effect of the moment. His camera is a witness to time and presence, as only traces of light and color are left in images that are powerful, beautiful and haunting.
