Dear GYA, I'm one step from away from grounding every single New Yorker to their rooms for the night. First, I had to ban smoking and trans fats. Now, I'm toying with the idea of banning big cups of soda. I swear to God, I will turn this car around right now and no one is getting their damned tax returns.---I hear there's some good stuff happening in SLC tonight -- anything worth banning? - Mayor Michael Bloomberg

Mayor Bloomberg, you can't just ban stuff that you don't like. Let people make their own dumb decisions. On the other hand, can you ban people from eating Taco Bell in my car? I really hate when those little tomatoes get in between the seats. Here's what's happening tonight:

The Downtown Farmers Market will be throwing an opening-day party at Squatters Pub Brewery. This summer-kick-off event will feature all the things that make the Farmers Market great -- local foods, art, beers and musicians. Plus, Squatters will be releasing a new Market brew for the occasion. The party starts at 5:30 p.m.

Don't miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to watch the planet Venus pass directly in front of the sun, beginning at 4 p.m. Since it's not recommended to check out the transit with the naked eye, multiple viewing parties (equipped with telescopes and solar filters) will be set up around the city to allow all you celestial fans a safe and enjoyable gander. Click the above link for venue locations.

Pat's Barbecue will be throwing the 1st Annual Family Promise and June Jubilee to benefit homeless families. For a $30 donation, party-goers can enjoy all-you-can-eat BBQ, bottomless Unita and Budweiser beer, live entertainment from the Sister Wives and, of course, the opportunity to help out needy Utah families. The grillin' starts at 6 p.m.

Other worthwhile events happening today:

- Folk-pop singers Greg Laswell and Elizabeth Ziman will be performing at The State Room, starting at 8 p.m.

- Legendary blues and r&b singer Terry Evans will be rippin' it up at Sun & Moon Cafe, beginning at 7 p.m.

Karaoke That Doesn't Suck is happening at The Woodshed tonight at 9 p.m.
