Artist Laura Slusser celebrates both her birthday tonight and seven years free of type 1 diabetes with an exhibition of her artwork. ---

Her paintings in acrylic are in a Pop Art style ("Neapolitan" is pictured) and make use of an ironic humor. In a "self portrait" of her sister, she ponders, from behind sunglasses, "Which one … Tom, Dick or Harry?" Another one, with a more direct artistic reference, expresses in a "thought balloon," "Cici nest pas un Leichtenstein."

In her fight against diabetes, Slusser underwent a combined kidney/pancreas transplant in 2005. The Make a Wish Foundation recently started including transplant recipients, and for her wish she is hoping to appear on The Rachel Maddow Show to try to promote organ donation and health-care reform.

The show runs one night only, at Slusser Gallery, as part of Gallery Stroll. The reception includes music and refreshments. Artists from Olympus High are also displaying their works in the show. Half of all sales will be donated to the Utah Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

Seven Birthdays Celebration, Slusser Gallery, 447 E. 100 South, 801-864-1235. 6-9pm. SlusserGallery.blogspot.com.
