The Salt Lake City Move to Amend group is close to reaching a goal to for a citywide ballot urging an end to corporate personhood -- the legal idea that corporations are people with similar rights -- that took an ugly turn after a 2010 Supreme Court decision allowed corporations to give unlimited donations to political campaigns. Now the local movement is 400 signatures away from reaching its goal.---

While several legal decisions have given corporations rights similar to people, the 2010 Citizens United case decision at the Supreme Court brought an evolution in the idea of corporate personhood that business owners are want to call evolution and activists would call a mutation. Since the 2010 Citizens United case, the national political scene has become overrun with Super PACs -- ones that make major donations in political campaigns without nearly the amount of transparency as was required of corporate donations in the past.

Move to Amend leaders and activists say the result is a court decision that has enshrined in law corporations' ability to buy and sell our public officials like they were private stocks and investments. That’s why the Move to Amend group is pushing a grass-roots revolution to call for a Constitutional Amendment to eliminate corporate personhood.

This weekend is the last opportunity to gather the final 400 signatures for the group to meet its 9,000-signature goal to get the initiative on the ballot in the fall. If you’re interested in helping out, here are the times to rally in the final canvassing push:

Thursday, April 12, 6 p.m. at Salt Lake City Main Library, 210 E. 400 South

Saturday, April 14, 2 p.m. at the Salt Lake City Main Library, 210 E. 400 South, and at the Sorenson Unity Center, 1383 S. 900 West, 5:30 p.m.

Sunday, April 15, 2 p.m. at the Salt Lake City Main Library, 210 E. 400 South.

After the final signatures have been turned in Sunday, on Monday, April 16, the group will be holding a press conference touting the results of their months of canvassing.

Check out the press conference, Monday, April 16, at 10:15 a.m. at the Salt Lake City & County Building, 451 S. State.
