There is never a time when I don't look forward to a glass of bubbly. But, springtime seems to really bring out the sparkling-wine lover in me. Sipping a bubble-filled glass on the patio is a favorite pastime. --- Well, here is a sparkling wine from Napa that I highly recommend for special occasions, or no occasion at all: Mumm Napa DVX.

The legendary French Champagne house of G.H. Mumm opened its Napa Valley Winery -- Mumm Cuvee Napa -- in 1986, and today, Champagne-born master winemaker Ludovic Dervin creates domestic sparkling wines in Napa using the methode traditionelle, handcrafting the wines, with each bottle fermented separately. The result is world-class Champagne-style sparkling wine at non-Champagne prices.

My favorite of the Mumm Napa line is DVX. It's called DVX in honor of Guy Devaux, who founded the Mumm Napa Valley winery. He passed away in 1995, but his spirit lives on in DVX. And, I'm not alone in loving this wine: Wine Enthusiast gave it a 94-point rating and Wine Spectator awarded the 2001 vintage 92 points.

DVX is Mumm Napa's signature cuvee -- beautifully balanced bubbly with flavors and aromas of toasted brioche, green apple, peaches and hints of raspberry and strawberry. It's simultaneously a dry, powerful sparkler, but also one with finesse and elegance, made from a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Now, here's the really good news: The 2001 vintage sells here for less than anywhere in the country that I've found. It's priced at a mere $33.99, while the winery itself sells the 2001 DVX for $48. The national shelf price is $50.

And, you even get a little trinket with each bottle. Draped around the neck of every bottle of Mumm DVX 2001 is a small metal Champagne glass. My wife has been wearing one around her wrist as a sort of good luck Champagne charm.

DVX: You'll love it.
