Racist Utah?

In the Standard-Examiner today, there's an interesting story about a recently aired episode of ABC's Primetime: What Would You Do? The story, perhaps inadvertently, asks the question: Is Utah a state of dyed-in-the-wool racists?---

That's how the show's host, John Quinones, and producers apparently see us.

The article, which you can read here, focuses on North Ogden actor Carleton Bluford. For the program, Bluford—a black man—sat in a Brigham City diner with a white woman, playing his girlfriend, while a third actor stormed up to their table and let loose a vicious racist tirade at the mixed couple to see how fellow diners would react.

Lamentably, while some diners spoke supportively of Bluford's character, others in the diner actually sided with the bigot, speaking out against whites mixing with "coloreds."

Bluford told the reporter that after the ruse was revealed, "every single person in that diner, most of them Caucasian, were more upset than me." He also thought that the producers chose Utah "because they expected residents to be biased."

So, did Quinones and his gang stereotype us as a bunch of racists, or is it a fair assumption?
