Local Releases: Short Month Brings Few Albums

We're wrapping up February's local releases with only a few from the past couple of weeks and one release show since this month was rather slow for new material. --- First up is the debut album from the singer/songwriter Damien Fairchild. Now, this one will be a bit confusing, so bear with me for a moment. Damien Fairchild is a fictional character, a 14-year-old boy with a guitar who sings about the girls he's fallen in love with and writes songs about them. The man behind the character is actually Provo-based singer/songwriter Drew Danburry, who started writing these songs a few months after his last album, Goodnight Dannii, hit the scene back in 2010. You might never see a live performance of these songs, but each one on the album For All The Girls has its own style and approach that's worth checking out and taking a listen to.You can download it in full from CD Baby.
Moving to punk, we have the debut release from the band Budnick. Unbeknownst to us all, The Hung Ups are done, which kinda sucks but harkens back to the old SLC standard that the winter kills off punk bands. But that didn't slow down drummer Chris Farnworth and singer Josh Recker from starting up their own band with Sean Johnson on bass to form this brand-new group. The six-track self-titled EP is exactly what you'd expect from the band -- shades of the prior with a little more melodic hints; it's a pretty good album. You can buy it for just $5 at the group's Bandcamp page.
Next up, we look at a mysterious hip-hop album from Israel West that dropped on everyone's doorstep a couple of weeks ago. There isn't much to say about West other than we know he owns Inoel Program Media, which deals a lot in video and film production. Beyond that, there is nothing to reference this album that he apparently recorded, titled Hip-Hop Skateboard 101. And don't be confused by the picture below, that is the actual artwork for the album. As for the music -- it's all right; not a lot here to rave about, but if you're into the genre you should at least give a listen. At the moment, there's no download location, you'll just need to search out a copy.
And finishing out this post is the debut release from Yours Truly. Half of this band should look familiar as it features David Payne of Red Bennies-fame playing with newcomer Robin Fults. The duo (seen above) take on multiple instruments with the 18-year-old Fults (who comes from Payne's Rock 'N' Roll Academy) in the lead-singer role, with both she and the duo putting together the full-length album Drawn From Life in late 2011. It's actually pretty good, which you would expect from an album made by Payne, but surprisingly, he has little to do with the actual album as the highlight is Fults with her strong vocals and piano skills. It's a little more indie-pop than some might care for, but it's worth at least checking out. You can catch the duo playing the official release show on Sunday night at Kilby Court with the Red Bennies and Noble Savages -- just $6, starting at 7p.m..
