Friday a bill offering non-discrimination protections in the workplace and in housing for all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Utahns will get its first -- and perhaps only -- committee hearing. Show up and speak out if you think discrimination is bad for business in Utah.---

Sponsored by Sen. Ben McAdams, D-Salt Lake City, Senate Bill 51 has struggled to be heard on the Hill ever since it was first introduced back in 2008, by Rep. Christine Johnson, D-Salt Lake City. Since her retirement, McAdams has taken on the bill that would make it illegal to discriminate against LGBT Utahns in hiring and firing, as well as in renting homes and other areas.

This session, the bill has received the endorsement of the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce, who has argued that the lack of a statewide non-discrimination ordinance is bad for business in Utah.

If you have a strong opinion on the matter and want to see how the Legislature will respond to the bill’s latest attempt at recognition, then check out the committee meeting today at the Utah State Capitol, 350 N. State, Utah State Capitol Room 415, Salt Lake City, at 2:15 p.m.Or visit the Legislature's website to listen to live audio from the hearing.
