This weekend’s political-organizing boot camp for women is more than just complimentary breakfast and a good keynote speaker, says Hinckley Institute Program Manager Lindsay Zizumbo. “We’re hoping to build a network of women [in politics],” Zizumbo says.---

As part of a nonpartisan partnership between numerous organizations including the YWCA, Salt Lake Community College, the League of Women Voters and the University of Utah’s Hinckley Institute of Politics, women can take part in free leadership training this weekend.

The event is free—but filling up fast. Local women who want to get involved in their community, from the gritty grassroots of helping organize a campaign all the way to running for office, can attend.

Zizumbo, who is helping organize the event, says it will include special training on multiple ways to get involved in politics from becoming a party delegate to running for office. Most importantly, Zizumbo says, people should remember this is not a one-time event, but that the partnership will be at hand to help women after the conference.

“We want to let them know they’re not going to be out in the dark if they decide to run for office,” Zizumbo says. “We'll help them fundraise, find a campaign manager, file for office -- we’ll even walk them down there if we need to.” That includes helping facilitate a peer network of women who want to run for office, or have been elected to office.

The event is Sat. Jan. 14 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and includes multiple breakout sessions, and complimentary breakfast and lunch for those who register. Saratoga Springs Mayor and 4th Congressional District candidate Mia Love will speak at the event and the keynote speaker will be Katie Groke-Ellis of The White House Project.
