Plum Alley Opens Tonight

Plum Alley -- a new venture from the creators of the wildly popular Copper Onion -- opens to the public this evening. ---

Unlike some of my can't-wait-to-be-first colleagues, I will not be reviewing the restaurant for a while (certainly not before it even opens), nor commenting on the food, other than to say you owe it to yourself to go check it out. I've already seen "non-review reviews" of this restaurant, based on pre-opening meals for friends and family. That's not something I will ever do.

Anyway, Ryan and Colleen Lowder and their talented crew (including chef Ryan Lamon) have branched out and opened Plum Alley, just a few steps east of the Copper Onion. Like the Copper Onion, the vibe at Plum Alley is funky and low-key, with an emphasis on Southeast Asian flavors, sometimes with a North American spin. To wit: "shrimp and grits," which is spiced shrimp with polenta wedges.

When I asked about the name Plum Alley, I was told that it was the name of the original little alley that was at the heart of Salt Lake's Chinatown at the turn of the last century.

Dishes from the opening menu include spicy pork larb salad; pork belly satay; green curry with bone marrow and braised beef; coconut milk-braised short ribs; vermicelli noodles & crab with cilantro; kimchi stew; duck salad; and much more.

Plum Alley will also offer wine, beer, cocktails, and interesting non-alcoholic drinks like coconut water, Fentimans sodas and rose lemonade.

Stay tuned for a full review -- once Plum Alley is up on its feet and the paint is dry.
