New music series launches in Provo

Muse Music strips down its traditional music programming tonight by launching a new series, Unplugged!.---

In the same vein as MTV’s classic Unplugged series, this showcase featuring Eidola -- and subsequent efforts -- will offer a stripped-down version of the band’s originals, plus some covers, which doesn’t necessarily mean an acoustic or folky rendition. Tonight’s show starts at 8 p.m. with a $5 cover.

This type of show is nothing new on a national level, but Muse booking liaison Darcie Roy says it is a fresh change for the Provo, and Utah, music scene and a new concept, in general, for Muse Music. The series’ focus is on Utah-based artists, but Roy says she’s open to expanding to national acts in the future.

Eidola will launch the series. They are a five-piece, Provo-based,  psychedelic-rock band fresh off of taking the grand prize in Muse’s 2011 Winter Battle of the Bands. Now they get a chance to rearrange those winning tunes differently.

“It’s a chance for artists to rethink their existing material in a new light. It’s getting back to the roots and why people like to write or, in general, listen: for the love of music,” Roy says, adding that Eidola will have guest performers to help add layers to these new arrangements.

Roy hopes that Unplugged! will become a monthly event, but without an act solidified for January, she thinks it might just go down every few months, citing that it is a big deal for a band to rework all of their material.

Mango Film Productions will be on site doing production work; one music video should be posted to Muse’s Website in the weeks to come, Roy says, adding that they will be doing an in-house audio recording that will be available for download.
