The Salt Lake City Council is expected to vote Tuesday on whether or not to finance a downtown Broadway-style performance arts theater to the tune of $110 million. Monday may be the public’s last chance to offer their boos or curtain calls to the proposal.---

Is Salt Lake City ready for the glitz and glamour of a Broadway-style theatre? Are taxpayers ready to foot the bill for one? The council is getting ready to make a decision and they still need your input. Currently, Mayor Ralph Becker has proposed a construction site for the Utah Performing Arts Theatre to be located on the east side of Main Street between 100 and 200 South. Scraping up the $110 million to finance the 2,500-seat theater would likely mean tapping into revenue streams resulting from the difference of the property taxes on the block, as well as property-tax revenue that is currently being used to pay off bonds for the Energy Solutions Arena.

For more info, you can visit the Open City Hall page here on the subject. Then, after you’ve gotten yourself informed, be sure to show up and speak out.

Check it out, Monday, Dec. 5, 5:30-6:30 p.m., at the Salt Lake City & County Building, 451 S. State.

Then to see what your city fathers do with your input, don’t miss the regular council meeting, Tuesday, Dec. 6, 7 p.m. at the Salt Lake City & County Building, Room 315, 451 S. State.
