Lounge Act Thursday: Guitar slingers, smooth dancers, free flick

Getting the weekend off to an early start is key to getting as much action in as possible before Monday arrives. We have some ways for you to kick things off right.---
You can't go wrong with a jaunt to The Garage Thursday night for the scorching guitar sounds of Bill Kirchen (pictured). He's famous to some as the axeman behind Commander Cody's take on "Hot Rod Lincoln," but I know him better as the guy who gave local blues dudes The Legendary Porch Pounders their name. I've seen him play a couple times, and he's the real thing, for sure, for rock n' rollers, twang, blues -- you name it. The show starts at 9 p.m.; $15 at the door.
Over at The State Room, The Wood Brothers headline a show grounded in bluesy roots-music, but which could easy veer into jazz territory here and there.
The artists of the Captain Captain studios are filling the walls of the Utah Arts Alliance with a group show that opens Thursday night—a fine choice for lovers of SLC's contemporary artists like Trent Call and Sri Whipple.
Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company opens its new season with Polychromatic, a multipiece night of contemporary dance that opens Thursday night.
The Utah Film Center is hosting a screening of Miss Representation at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. The Sundance flick explores media imagery of powerful women via interviews with the very same. The screening is free at 7 p.m.
