Local band makes it, celebrations commence

About two weeks ago, Fictionist, the five-piece indie-rock band, announced they had signed a longterm contract with Atlantic Records (Death Cab for Cutie, Lupe Fiasco, Jason Mraz, and more). This announcement comes just months after their final-four finish in Rolling Stone’s “Do You Wanna Be A Rock & Roll Star” contest. However, the news can’t be chocked up to just a cause-and-effect of that. They have paid their dues over the past three years. This includes two self-released full-length albums, numerous regional gigs and an international tour. Plus, simply put, their “atmospheric rock”—think of Wilco, Radiohead or the Beatles, has legs..
The list of Provo label signees grows bigger by the year, it seems -- a “collection” for Velour’s owner Corey Fox (read an interview with him here). Fictionist hopes that this deal will continue to have ripple effects in that music scene.
“We are proud to be from Utah and excited to draw even more attention to the phenomenal talent and music scene thriving in this state,” says keyboardist Jacob Jones. “We owe a lot of our present success to the help and generosity of Utah’s great music venues, promoters, bloggers, radio stations, producers, engineers, and of course, the incredible fans. We know we could not have done this alone.”
The band will release their Atlantic debut, a five-song EP, in the fall. That will be followed by a full-length in 2012. But for tonight, they will celebrate with a big show on their home turf.
