Congressional Redistricting Meeting Thursday

Like a hot pizza thrown in the face of Utah, a congressional map that will likely divide up Utah’s liberal, urban core with large rural and conservative chunks of the state could get the thumbs up at Thursday’s meeting -- despite mixed support from Utahns.---

The “Pizza” plan, proposed by Sen. Michael Waddoups, R-Taylorsville, is one congressional redistricting map that will likely be discussed at the Legislature’s Redistricting Committee meeting Thursday -- the plan many liberal Salt Lakers worry will divide up their communities for the sake of trying to keep a Democrat from representing Utah in Washington, D.C. The “Donut” plan, favored by Democrats, would leave Salt Lake County largely as a district all its own.

A recent poll conducted by the Salt Lake Tribune and Mason-Dixon Polling Research shows that, statewide, 53 percent of Utahns preferred the Donut plan, compared to 40 percent supporting the Pizza plan.

This meeting may be one of the last chances to speak up for political maps that guide common communities into their political future.

Check it out, Thursday, Sept. 22, 9 a.m. at the Utah State Capitol, 350 N. State, Room 30 House Building. For audio links to the committee, visit the Legislature’s main page here.
