Holy Thursday! Kick off your weekend with some infectious tunes, a hearty Heffe'film'n flick or something else from the City Weekly extensive daily listings. Check it.---
Thursday at The Urban Lounge, local treasure the Joshua Payne Orchestra celebrates the release of their stellar new album, Zoom, with a show that also includes Calico and Coyote Hoods. If you haven't seen JPO at any of their midnight street shows this summer, consider this a perfect chance to catch up with a vibrant band full of musical ideas.
Thursday at The Depot, the "MmmBop" boys themselves take the stage, but if you think that one earworm of a tune from the mid-'90s is all Hanson has to offer, you're wrong. The Oklahoma-based trio has been crafting catchy pop-rock for years now, and singer Taylor Hanson even has a side project, Tinted Windows, that also includes James Iha of Smashing Pumpkins and A Perfect Circle as well as Bun E. Carlos from Cheap Trick. If those guys recognize the skills of the Hanson middle brother, maybe you can, too.
If you like free flicks--and who doesn't, right?--the Heffe'film'n series returns to Brewvies with a screening of Beerfest at 10 p.m.. You'll want to get there earlier to get a seat, though.
If you're heading down Provo way, consider a stop to see the Tanglewood Marionettes, a New England puppetry company who is setting up shop on the BYU campus for the next three days to showcase some amazing work via 45-minute performances.
