Cinematic soundscapes, troubadours and the blues, oh my.---

Just because the cinematic six-piece Calexico hasn’t put out an album in several years doesn’t mean they haven’t been busy. The band that infuses Western tinged guitar with Spanish horns has been writing scores for films as of late, most notably the 2011 Sundance Film Festival flick The Guard. Read our full feature, including an interview, here. Calexico plays at Urban Lounge tonight; music starts at 10 p.m.

Speaking of Sundance, the highly lauded documentary about James Taylor, Carole King and the rest of the folk songsters from their early 1970s heyday in Los Angeles, Troubadours: The Rise of the Singer-Songwriter, will play at Red Butte Garden tonight. Bring some chairs and a picnic and be ready to hear the songs that you know all too well.

Back on the music tip, Trevor Hall, another crooner, although of a new generation, will woo the In the Venue crowd with his boyishly good looks, pop hooks and soft, wavering voice tonight.

And the blues again will be taking over State Street this evening. Over at The State Room Cody Canada & the Departed, Amarillo Highway and Jason Eady will get things started at 8 p.m. Then Brian Ernst, Tony Holiday Band and Marinade will be gigging down at Bar Deluxe.
