Park City Arts Festival Best Bets

With well over 200 artists, working in 12 mediums, on display at Park City's second largest event, it can seem daunting to find some provocative, invigorating art. Here's a little help.---

Although the weather in the mountain town is hot and sunny for the 42nd annual Park City Kimball Arts Festival, it is cool, by comparison, for sculptor Alexis Silk (pictured above). Silk works with molten glass that reaches 2,000 degrees as she molds it into figurative pieces. Like the piece shown, her artistry is concerned with the space where industry, nature and humans interact.

If Silk's work begs questions to be asked, then Tanya Doskova's surrealistic pieces are an enigma. Venturing from Vancouver, B.C., Doskova has traveled farther than any other artist for this festival, and her work might be recognizable to patrons of the Utah Arts Festival. Her latest piece has a giant man wading in a foot of water, running away from the dangers of an oil rig fire and a hurricane as he carries his family tree in a wheelbarrow made out of a shoe. Weird and interesting.

More quirkiness comes from Park City resident Lone Vilnius in her mixed-media creations that incorporate antiques, funky junk and miniature reproductions. The outcomes are whimsical and, at times, political.

For something a little different, check out Leif Holland's botanical constructions. Within handmade wooden boxes, Holland frames snapshots of nature, such as an aspen grove. It is obvious that Holland is obsessive about material collection. Holland's work is pristine, minimalist and evokes nature photography but with 3-D texture.

And, of course, this is not an exhaustive list, as there are plenty of talented artists doing work to suit whatever your fancy may be.
