Captain Jack is back, delivering a quantity of fun that was actually only worth about $1.50 in the first place. ---
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides marks Johnny Depp's fourth go-round as Captain Jack Sparrow, and in the abstract it's kind of awesome that such a resolutely idiosyncratic screen creation has become the foundation for a franchise. But there's not enough of him here -- though there's time enough for a ridiculous mermaid-romance subplot -- and what there is of him collides in chemistry-free form with Penelope Cruz's romantic interest/foil. Kudos for more time for Geoffrey Rush's Barbossa, but we need more Jack.
For the tweens, there's Monte Carlo, a very loose adaptation of a novel in which a quartet of mature women are mistaken for heiresses and targeted by gold diggers. Here, the not-really-rich foursome are post-graduation teens, including Selena Gomez and Leighton Meester. It's clothes, cuteness and girl power.
