Big things sometimes come in small packages, but they also come in big packages, too.---

In an interview on NPR with All Things Considered host Guy Raz this past Saturday, Battles drummer John Stanier confessed that the band’s way with creating sounds was so mind-bending that he didn’t ever know how they did it. Stating they have a lack of influences for holing themselves up in a Brooklyn basement, and not being a part of any particular musical movement, Stanier said, most aptly, that Battles has a sound all its own—an experimental clamor that is weirdly melodic. Now on the heels of their sophomore release, Gloss Drop, and one produced without former frontman Tyondai Braxton, they will bring that confusing cacophony to Urban Lounge tonight starting at 9 p.m.

HR of Bad Brains fame will bring his loud blend of reggae and punk-rock to The Complex tonight. The eclectic voice behind the pioneering punk band stands alone in his own right and will be worth the cost of admission even if his long-time bandmates aren’t with him.

I can’t think of a better nighttime vortex to seemingly get away from Salt Lake City than to head to The Bayou for some jambalaya, paired with an Abita Turbodog, before heading across the street to The State Room for one of the Big Easy’s finest horn-heavy bands. For nearly 20 years, The Rebirth Brass Band has been spreading their special spice of jazz and funk to all corners of the globe. It’s as thick as roux and as sinfully delicious as the powdered sugar that tops a beignet from Cafe Du Monde.
